While the main focus at fashion week was clearly on the clothes, accessories were not far behind, including the all-important issue of eyewear. A focus on focus, so to speak, within the tents revealed a definite trend. For those attending, whose lifestyles revolve around style and appearance, the prevailing choice, for both genders, was large, bold, graphic and predominantly tortoise or black. Whether their glasses are considered retro or geek, it’s easy to see that these fashionistas are not afraid to make a striking statement with their foremost facial accessory.
And at the shows, one of the noticeable eyewear trends, in keep with the sartorial styles, was a harkening back to earlier eras of gracious, elegant and feminine attire. Nowhere was this more evident than at Carolina Herrera, where her new sunglasses reflected the glamour and romance of her collection.
The last look shown was an immediate reminder of Grace Kelly. That’s why they call it timeless elegance!
At Badgley Mischka, the styles also had a feminine retro appeal, evoking the smoldering mystery of Hitchcock heroines. The cool polished veneers of these characters belied the sense of danger and sensuality lurking just beneath the surface. Just like the classic scenario of the school teacher who removes her glasses and lets down her hair, only to reveal her sexy alter ego, these glasses seem buttoned up with a healthy hint of the what’s to come.
The complete other end of the spectrum was expressed in the sporty urbanism at Michael Kors, where neon brights and camoflage popped off of slick polished blacks. His view of “bright lights, fast city” included rubberized shaker knits and industria-strength zippers, all intended for chic “urban survival.” The eyewear was equally modern and athletic with visor-like shapes, futuristic geometrics and sleek minimalistic glamour, perfect for going straight from the gym to the office.
Whether you’re looking for feminine or futuristic, there will certainly be an eyewear style (or more than one, if you’re a collector like me) perfectly suited to your fashion needs for fall. It’s the easiest way to accessorize your look!
