Don’t Fry This Memorial Day

If you’re like most of America, you probably took the day off to get an early start to the unofficial kickoff to summer. What you might not know, however, is that today is actually Don’t Fry Day, too – an effort by the National Council on Skin Cancer Prevention to encourage sun safety awareness. So in addition to lathering up your SPF, make sure you keep your peepers safe with ultra-violet (UV) protected sunnies! Many people don’t realize that exposing your eyes, and the sensitive skin surrounding them, to the sun’s harmful rays can lead to serious health problems like cataracts, macular degeneration and cancer. Fortunately, we have some fabulous options to help you avoid of those risks.

When looking for new shades, it’s important to make sure that they provide UVA and UVB protection. Having multiple pairs that fit comfortably on your face will ensure that you’ll wear them more often. A variety of shapes are available with UV protection; however, wraparound styles or frames with larger temples will help block the sun from side angles. Also keep in mind that UV exposure is possible year-round, so make sure to have sunnies for every season. Remember, always buy your sunglasses from a reputable retailer to guarantee that you’re getting quality frames and lenses.

Last, but certainly not least, make sure that your kiddos are in the habit of wearing sunglasses before having fun in the sun. Children receive three times the amount of annual sun exposure of adults and, unlike the mature lens of an adult eye, a child’s lens cannot filter out UV rays; therefore, more radiation reaches the retina making them more susceptible to UV damage. Luckily, kid’s shades are available at reasonable price points and come in fun shapes and colors.
